
Dr. Alyssa Cole Mixon, D.O., MBA (known to her followers as Dr. Cole and her patients as Dr. Mixon) is a physical medicine and rehabilitation doctor who is sub-specialized in cancer rehabilitation, helping to optimize the function and quality of life of her patients. In addition to being a doctor, she is a social media content creator and blogger, where she shares what life is like in and outside of medicine while educating her audience on accurate health information. As a cancer rehabilitation doctor, Dr. Mixon cares for patients before, during and after their cancer treatment. She helps her patients manage a variety of neurologic, musculoskeletal and lymphatic conditions and side effects that can result from cancer-related interventions like radiation, surgery and chemotherapy. With each patient, Dr. Mixon strives to enhance their functional capacity and overall well-being.
Born and raised in New Hampshire, she attended the University of New Hampshire, where her passion for both art and science led her to earn a dual degree in Classics and Biology. She then matriculated to the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM), learning a more holistic approach to medicine. She graduated from UNECOM in 2016, completed her intern year in internal medicine at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, MA, her physical medicine and rehabilitation or PM&R residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA and her Cancer Rehabilitation Fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania also in Philadelphia. She is now an Assistant Professor and the Associate Program Director of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of Virginia, where she practices as an attending physician. She is the only Cancer Rehabilitation sub-specialist in the state of Virginia. Outside of work, she enjoys spending her free time with family, friends and her dog. She also enjoys traveling, reading, yoga, pilates, and photography.
