A new study from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Medicine questions the practice of giving heart-healthy patients blood pressure drugs before surgeries that do not involve the heart. Patients with no heart risk factors who were given a beta-blocker were 1.2 times more likely to die and develop dangerously low blood pressure during the study period than those not given the drug.
