Fish Oil and Semen, Belviq, HPV for Adults, Abortion Drug Reversal

Just when you thought you’d aged out of having to decide about HPV vaccination, more options are back for those up to 45 years old. Politics are driving a misinformation campaign on the so-called abortion reversal drug and risking women’s lives. What to do about declining semen quality in men? A serious warning about a diet drug. There’s a lot to worry about here in the new year.

Semen and Fish Oil

Apparently the quality and quantity of semen being produced by the males of our species has been declining in the developed countries for years. Many studies of low quality have shown a connection between improved semen and eating fish, shellfish and seafood, poultry, cereals, vegetables and fruits, low-fat dairy, and skim milk. A new study of much better quality (though with flaws), has shown that men taking fish oil supplements have produced better semen quality and sex hormone concentration.

Belviq

A clinical trial has linked Belviq and Belviq XR to cancer. Belviq (locarserin) was approved seven years ago to use with reduced-calorie diet and exercise to help weight loss in adults who are overweight or obese. The drug works in the brain to create a feeling of fullness so that the urge to eat is lessened.

The clinical trial showed a link, but has not proven Belviq causes cancer. The concern is significant enough that the FDA has put out an alert so that those taking Belviq can discuss the risks and benefits with their doctors.

HPV for Adults

Adults between the ages of 27-45 are eligible to get or complete the HPV vaccination. The CDC (Center for Disease Control) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended the following guidelines to doctors for discussion with patients:

Persons who are in a long-term, mutually monogamous sexual partnership are not likely to acquire a new HPV infection or benefit from vaccination. The vaccine may be more beneficial for persons who have had few prior sex partners and who are at greater risk of acquiring unencountered strains of HPV from new sex partners. Individuals with multiple prior sex partners are likely to have been exposed to the vaccine serotypes in the past, reducing usefulness.

Abortion Reversal Medicine

“Several states now require women who seek medication abortions to be provided with dubious information that the procedure could be stopped, allowing a pregnancy to continue. But when researchers attempted to carry out a legitimate study of whether these “abortion reversal” treatments were effective and safe, they had to stop almost immediately — because some of the women who participated in the study experienced dangerous hemorrhaging that sent them to the hospital.
