Synthroid (levothyroxine) had no impact on improving quality of life or reducing tiredness in older adults with subclinical hypothyroidism, a slightly underactive thyroid, according to a new study. For at least a year, researchers examined patients with an average age of 74who had higher-than-normal thyroid-stimulating hormone levels by administering levothyroxine to one group and placebo to the other. The drug failed to bring about any improvement. Patients did not become physically stronger or mentally faster after taking the drug. Furthermore, they didn’t lose weight or feel more energetic. Fourteen U.S.-based companies received a warning letter from the FDA for peddling products that claimed to prevent, treat or cure cancer. The products are commonly found on websites and social media platforms where they are marketed and sold without FDA approval. The FDA urges consumers to avoid using these products because they may be have side effects, lack any clinical benefits and could dissuade a person from seeking an appropriate and potentially life-saving cancer diagnosis or treatment from a medical professional. National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is this Saturday, April 29. This event aims to provide a safe, convenient and responsible means of discarding prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Most of the drop-off sites are at police departments, though some pharmacies may also accept unused drugs. Via Drug Enforcement Administration.
