I received the J & J vaccine on April 5th with some slight soreness at the injection site. Two weeks later I felt a stinging pain and now near the injection site is very tender and the skin is numb. It almost feels like there’s still a needle in my arm at times. Every so often I feel that same stinging pain as well.
Starting yesterday, two weeks after receiving the J and J injection, I have also started to feel like I’m being injected at random times throughout the day.
I got my J&J shot on April 10th all was fine, no pain whatsoever until this Friday April 30th. From my neck to the site of the injection. It feels like I am sleeping on a golf ball in my neck (it’s not a bump just pain) and my arm feels like a giant needle was pushed into it where the shot was given. It hurts to move that arm too
I had my first Pfizer vaccine on February 22 with no problems. After my second vaccine on March 17, I had arm pain which became worse over time to the point that my arm aches 24/7 and the pain wakes me up at night, even though I was taking two 650 mg tablets of Acetaminophen twice a day. It has been 42 days/nights of suffering, I finally went in to see the doctor, diagnosis “Covid Vaccine Arm” I was given prescriptions for Prednisone and Meloxicam. I feel that the vaccine definitely exacerbated my rheumatoid arthritis. I look forward to a good night’s sleep without pain, hopefully soon.
I am wondering if that is what happened to me. I am 61 years old. I have arthritis, and the pain wakes me up at night. It radiates from my shoulder to my hand. I am wondering if it exacerbated my arthritis too? Thank you for sharing. I will call my doctor.
Hi Betty….I had a very similar experience. After my vaccine on January 13, I experienced severe pain in my arms a week later. The pains were constant and kept me up at night….I finally saw a rheumatologist in April….After extensive blood work, I was diagnosed with advanced rheumatoid arthritis. I never had pain in my joints before…I was given Prednisone and Hydroxychloroquine….The Prednisone is working but the Hydroxychloroquine will take a while to take effect…I’ve been reading so many articles….Conclusion is that my arthritis was dormant….I am 76 and have been very active…..The vaccine spiked a flare up of the arthritis….I had the Pfizer vaccine….With this website and listening to others, I am shocked that there hasn’t been much press given to our pain. Good luck…
Hi Betty, Had my 2nd Moderno shot 10 Feb and until just recently had a very sore shoulder intermittently. I had been taking Meloxicam for about five years for my knees and it worked there. I just used a heating pad when the shoulder got bad. It seemed like the vaccine woke up my immune system to deal with some latent arthritis in the shoulder. Hopefully the Meloxicam will help you. It took all my knee problems away for last five years and as an anti-inflamatory should help your arm. I am hoping whatever happened to my arm is now gone. I do believe the vaccine triggered something because I had no arm symptoms prior to the second shot. However, would still get the shot and will get subsequent boosters. Hang in there, you will get better.
Second Moderna shot a week ago. First shot had arm neck pain. Second shot pain went away but came back day 7 worse than evr. I can barely turn my head. Arm neck and shoulder pain going down to my hands. Muscle (Sore to touch) and nerve pain. I am on immunosuppressing drugs which I was told stop and to start back after a week. As soon as I did the pain started back. No Dr knows what to do. Take my drugs as usual or not.
have you heard about anyone else having pain, it going away for 2 weeks, then coming back after the first dose?
I had the AstraZeneca shot on Sat April 24/2021, arm was a bit sore that day but only at the exact site of injection.. After a day of chills and aches, it was getting better but 4 days after the shot, my arm and shoulder started to ache more and it hurt to sleep on it. It is also a bit bloated, and warm to the touch.. I am glad to read that I am not alone and that it is maybe just par for the course…
Had 1st phizer on april 15, little sore and then a red rash near site for 2 days, about 2 in diameter. went away. All good until day 11, yesterday, rash back and a little redder and worse, arm getting sore..worse than before. Guess this is the delayed thing i’ve heard about. Anyone with delayed reaction, my Dr hasn’t seen it yet in other patients, made me a bit nervous to hear that.
I had no pain after ,my first Moderna shot but the day after I got it I had a black and blue bruise at the injection site. It didn’t hurt but it took two weeks to heal. After the stuff I am reading about the blood disorder causing bruising I am a bit leery of getting the 2nd shot. I know of no one who had a bruise. Can anyone speak to this? I wasn’t getting any firm reassurance from my doc’s office.
This happened to me as well got second and was just fine
Hi Sharri. I got my first Pfizer shot on May 13 and didn’t feel pain but my arm was sore for 3 days. However, I did notice a bruise (blue and purple) at the injection site a few days after. It’s now been 8 days after the shot and my bruise is still there as well. It’s about 3/8 inch in diameter. I generally bruise very easily, but am also concerned about this.
I had my second shot of Moderna on Sunday 4/18/2021. Felt perfectly normal then on Thursday (4 days later) severe pain set in my arm. No red spots, not at the shot sight, but severe pain in my arm. from my elbow to my shoulder) settling mostly in my shoulder on the second day. The pain has now subsided, but it is still tender. The pain was almost unbearable, but no redness, I finally took a pain pill (twice) as Extra Strength Tylenol didn’t phase it.

I had my 2nd does of the Oxford vaccine 16/1/21 2days later developed a very painful arm and shoulder I had very reduced arm movements. Was seen by a rheumatologist 5 weeks ago who after a scan & X-ray diagnosed frozen shoulder. I was then given a hydrocortisone injection into my shoulder and hydro dilation performed. It helped that I could move my arm more freely but I still have a lot of pain in my upper arm and still having to take prescribed medication. Has anyone had the same experience. I live in the uk
Hi Pauline, I had my first dose of the Oxford vaccine in mid February. The pain in my arn and shoulder started about 5 hours after the jab and is still continuing now over 3 months later. I cancelled my second jab last week as the pain has been almost unbearable at times. I am on constant pain killers. I too live in the UK and the doctors I have seen have been at a loss as to the cause. They have said maybe my immune system has over reacted, (I have osteoarthritis or maybe I have bursitis or maybe both!) At the moment I am waiting for a scan of my arm. I am finding the constant pain exhausting. I think many more people than we realise are suffering these very bad side effects, but there seems to be silence from the media about almost anything other than mild side effects – no one wants to be accused of impeding the vaccine roll out.
Also cancelled my 2nd Astra Zeneca jab, due to the pain in my arm, had my first injection mid February as well as Sue . The doctors weren’t interested as I had no physical visual symptoms, The pain is not great, it is just there all the time . ( like a knot inside my arm accompanied by a stinging bee) . Anyone with any answers?
I had J&J March 11, shoulder, neck and shoulder blade ached for 6 weeks. Now the paid is in my elbow and lower arm. I have a time holding something with any grip and taking off a shirt over my head. Today is April 30.
Hi, I had two dozes of Pfizer and am experiencing similar symptoms weeks after second dose. Every time I have to use a lot of strength in my arm (I am a small woman but i do have a lot of heavy projects i work on around our home and business and equipment lifting) and I need strength from my shoulder I started feeling pain and weekness in my shoulder that seems to get worse once it reaches the injection site in my arm and then the weakness and pain just preads all over. My arm functions well otherwise and with regular daily activities i don’t even notice it. However being mostly ambidextrous I can not longer count on some lifting, support and pushing /pulling with my left arm. I am taking about weights of 20-40 lbs, nothing crazy. I am in the US and I am cery reluctant to report to the doc, because people are already afraid of vaccinations and I don’t want to sound like i am trying to discredit this one. So i am in a “wait and see” holding pattern but at the point of “let me see if there are more people experiencing this” and what ithers had to do/say etc.
Hi, I had my first jab of the Astra Zeneca vaccine on 26th March and from the next day onward, I suffered from a painful arm, I could not lift my arm for a few days and although the overall pain subsided, I still have a bruised arm a month later, where I received the injection. It is sore to the touch and when I sleep on it. Not sure if that is a normal reaction and am worried the pain is still here when I go for my second jab.
I had my first dose of the Pfizer yesterday but the thing that is strange to me is I’m having pain in my right upper arm but the injection was given in my left arm! Has anyone had this happen to them?
Dad and I both did Pfizer and used left arms each time. I received my second dose yesterday. I can’t even lift my right arm. My spine also feels like it is on FIRE.
Following my first– I ended up in urgent care– (fever, sweating, dry incessant cough, head /sinus and body aches) was told it was normal reaction, complicated by allergies and dehydration. The following week was impossible: I had every reported pain and symptom you could imagine (minus vomiting and diarrhea), but I also had a back aches that moved around and sometimes a sharp pain that radiated down either hamstring. I also experienced feeling very anxious and depressed. I didn’t even bother to call my healthcare team: from what I hear “hydrate and take an antihistamine” has been the pervasive response. I’m exasperated. Knowing what I know now, I would not have taken the vaccine…any hope at peace of mind has vanquished. I’m now worried about what is happening to my body. This IS NOT normal for me.
Dad, 73, had second shot on 3/22. He had no reactions either time. Today, he noted that his entire arm feels weak and dead and that he is having pain at the injection site.
I had Pfizer
Yes I’ve had the same thing! About 3 weeks after 1st jab, restricted movement in right arm although had jab in left arm. Can’t put arm above head or behind me and now painful all the time. Keeping me awake at night. I did already suffer from headaches and neck probs but these had disappeared. They are now back! Had 2nd Jab a few days ago and I think it’s getting worse. Not sure what to do. Dr had said it’s frozen shoulder but I am not convinced.
I had the same thing. Pain in my right arm, elbov region, lasted for 6-8 weeks. Sometimes is still a little bit sore, when I work hard.
Yes. I had my shot in my left arm and my right arm is still sore. I had my vaccine almost 2 weeks ago. The pain is in the crook of my arm (here you would normally get blood drawn). It hurts to use it to lift anything.
I have been in pain since January 20….7 days after my first Pfizer vaccine. I have been posting since then. Had blood tests done….My C-Reactive protein results were high….also indicated that I had rheumatoid arthritis. I have never had any joint pain ….I am active…I do have an auto immune disease called Hashimotos. The doctor thinks that the vaccine could have flared up the arthritis…..Now I have been prescribed medication and hope to,see results….This has been a very frustrating few months. Good luck to all of you who are experiencing these symptoms.
Hi Linda, is the medicine helping? In September during my annual I was tested for arthritis through a blood test and I was negative… but the pain I’m feeling in my arm and back feels like arthritis so I’m very confused. I’m seeing a primary this week.. some days are better than others… but this has been going on for a week. Does your doctor think this will go away? This is so crazy.
My doctor put me onPrednisone 20 mg for 7 days….10 mg for 7 days. All my tests showed high inflammation….and positive for rheumatoid arthritis. Also prescribed Hydroxychloroquine….It’s amazing how much better I feel….I have no pain….!!!!!! i don’t want to stay on the Hydroxychloroquine….I hope this is a flare up because of the vaccine. I didn’t have any joint pain before…..I was having some foot pain prior to the vaccine….Now that I think back….the foot was swollen and inflamed. Saw a podiatrist and diagnosed Morton’s Neuroma but when I went back a week later, she was noting that there was still swelling. I hope you find some relief….I ‘ve had the arm pain since January 20th….
Just in case you’d like to read this- it’s a case study about the possibility of an RA flare associated with the vaccine: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanrhe/article/PIIS2665-9913(21)00108-9/fulltext#%20
Hi Emma. I have a quick question – is it okay for me to email you? I’m not sure where to find your email address. Thanks so much in advance.
Hi Lisa,
You can use the contact form here. It’ll come to me. https://medshadow1stg.wpenginepowered.com/contact/
Hi Emma, I continue to read more folks with an “arm reaction” and wonder if the medical community is really investigating this apparent cause and effect. Many are opting out of the second shot. I bet a little explanation by the medical community might encourage folks to get that second shot. Many of these “arm reactions” are similar and very much like the reaction I got with the second Moderno shot. I believe in the vaccine, but I also believe in full disclosure.
Hi Jim,
They’re definitely being investigated, though I am not sure as to the extent of said investigations. As you can see at the top of this article, a research team at Mass General has begun looking into it. Here is a Q&A with one of the researchers on that team https://abc7news.com/how-long-will-my-arm-be-sore-after-covid-19-shot-rash-moderna-pfizer-vaccine/10420920/
Hi Emma, I would disagree with Dr. Seff. Most Covid Arms seem to happen after the second shot, mine included. I understand why the medical community does not want to discuss in depth as it might discourage others from getting shot and agree. However, most can handle facts and would prefer those in lieu of uncertainly.
Hi Emma, Interesting case study. I firmly believe that the vaccine did “awaken” an arthritic response in my left shoulder. Now 2 1/2 months later it is gradually subsiding. There must be an authentic medical reason so many have this particular side effect. People have to keep their sense of humor and remember how deadly the virus is and not get too upset over some side effects. My layman theory is that a stimulated immune system will search out weakness and agitate it. Looking forward to the booster since six months flies by.
Emma….Thank you so much for the link to that article. I already wrote to the author about my situation.
got my shots in Jan & feb. arm is still sore not swollen
I got mine in March. Still can’t use my arm completely.
I have the same. Shot back in February. Deltoid and shoulder hurt once raised above the head. No rash but feels sore.
Mine is the same! Aches in the exact spot I got my 1st doe of Pfizer in. I go for my second dose in 2 days. Nervous about a second shot in an already aching muscle.
Yes very helpful, I the Johnson and Johnson and 2 weeks after I was having pain in my collar bone then a couple days later my lymph nodes under the arm I had shot in felt like they were swollen. The collar bone lasted about 5 days and lymph nodes are still tender…
same thing here, 3 weeks later! I had nothing when I first got it.
My husband is suffering from severe arm pain with 1st and 2nd pfizer vaccine – any recommendations for pain?
“Gulick, who has received payments for consulting with pharma companies on HIV and hepatitis C drugs…”
What in the world? This isn’t an identifying detail, readers aren’t supposed to go “oh, right, THAT Gulick”, so you must think that detail is noteworthy in and of itself.
There are two alternatives to doctors getting paid to consult on drug development.
A, the doctors just volunteer. That would save big pharma a lot of money, and reduce the number of doctors that would be willing to involve themselves in drug production, but I don’t actually think either of those outcomes are good.
Or B, doctors DON’T consult on the making of drugs. That would obviously be terrible.
Get it together.
Hi Skylar,
This is part of MedShadow’s editorial mission. While it is necessary to have doctors involved in making/testing/marketing drugs, we generally try to avoid using those particular doctors as sources in our articles to minimize the chances of any conflicts of interest. When we do include such a doctor, such as in this case, we disclose that information to our readers.
Received my first does of Moderna April 12, only felt a slight jab, my arm was sore (12 & 13) to the point it only hurt to raise it or sleep on it, 4/18/21 it only feels kinda like a slight sting where the needle went in, had it done on my dominant arm, so maybe that the reason, since I use it a lot and workout! Otherwise no other issues! NOTE: I felt safe and relax throughout the whole process, EMT were there and kept an eye on you afterwards and answer any concern I had about my own medical history etc before taken shot! . Looking forward to my second and hopefully getting on with some what of a normal life!
Had my steroid injection into my shoulder joint today. It’s been 2 months , and the agony and weakness is getting worse. I pray I will get some relief, but I am not very optimistic.
Taylor,
Consider yourself lucky if the Advil is working—and in your case it sounds like an inflammatory response. I have no definitive answer yet—just biding time with my pain and trying to manage pain with lidocaine patches. The rheumatologist should have more specific answers and I am doing a countdown to the day that I can see her. As most reports are stating, any pre-existing condition may worsen with the vaccine in these “rare” cases and that is what I was told. It may coincide with an inflammatory response but I will definitely be back on here to share whatever I learn. Stay strong and I hope you are still feeling less pain today.
I had my first vaccine on 5 March and felt quite ill the following day but was fine on the second day. I woke up on the 3rd day with pain in my arm, the injection site sore to touch. Today I still have the pain, in fact it has got gradually worse. I rested my arm for several days but I am a yoga teacher and practice most days but I now have to work through pain. I have kept myself fit my whole life (I’m almost 64) and before the vaccination I was fit and healthy. I am despairing about my arm as I can barely hold my phone to my ear to talk on my phone, after a minute or so I have to switch arms. For me this is debilitating and I don’t want to have the second vaccination as a result.
Hi Jody,
I’m so sorry we are all going through this. I was so excited to get the vaccine because I’m so afraid of Covid but now I’m so worried and upset about how I’ve been feeling. Mine all started 8 days after 1st Pfizer dose but it was all in biceps and shoulder pain like rotator cuff pain and it lasted to the day of my 2nd vaccine… now 4 days after the 2nd was when the costochrondiris pain started but it only lasted for the day yesterday, hopefully it doesn’t come back today. Now it’s really in my shoulder blades and upper back . My doctors are saying it’s an inflammatory response to my body making antibodies? Who knows. Advil does really help me, but I don’t know what the plan is long term. Does your doctor have any insight? Thank you!
Hi Taylor. That is exactly what I have-costochondritis. I had the second Pfizer vaccine on 3/15-over 3 weeks ago. I have since seen my PCP and had blood work and X-Rays. No significant findings whatsoever. Since I have had costochondritis before, I believe the vaccine has made what is typically a 3 week at most condition into a chronic and very painful one. I was put on oral prednisone and it did not help at all—neither do NSAIDs. I was given Lidocaine patches and to date, that is the only thing that is helping me manage my pain. I am seeing a rheumatologist at the end of April and we will take it from there. My pain started under my arm to upper back and shoulder area and I still have pain under the arm and my rib pain is the worst. Here is to feeling better and please do keep in touch. How long since you have been vaccinated and did you have the second vaccine??? Positive vibes to all…..
I had the Pfizer vaccine March 8. I’ve never had any issues with my arm before. I was diagnosed with arthritis in my left knee, but jot my arm. I still can’t move it all the way- there’s a pain that completely prevents me from moving it up, or reaching back. I’m glad to have been vaccinated, but I’m concerned about my arm. It’s been 2 months! Will it ever be right?
Does anyone after pain on the breastbone and upper back … almost like a costochronidits pain?
