Had my first Pfizer in early Feb. I have had alot of pain in many places, but now pretty much shoulders and bicep/deltoid junction both sides. Ibuprofen daily, at specific times is the only way I function. My issues are not SIRVA related. I think those of us who experience movement of the complaints in the shoulder /arm/neck/back regions are having similar complaints to people with myofascial issues. Maybe our individual auto immune responses are inflaming the fascia? It would explain the “movement” of the complaints.
I had my second astrazeneca vaccine and I have pain in my neck spine shoulders and shoulder blades so painful
It’s been hard to breath
With in a hour of the vaccine I got hot my neck went stiff and it was like some one poured concrete down my neck spine shoulders I’ve been unable to move in 4 days the pain so intense and there’s no information anywhere all it says is muscle pain
Well there muscle pain and being unable to move I’m on my 5 th day I can sit up and move my arm a little to type
That’s about it
Dear Sam, I had the same exact pain in my neck and spine as well as shoulder pain with my first vaccine – that lasted 2 1/2 weeks then went away completely just in time for my second dose. Dose 2 – same thing, a hot flash right after and some anxiety, really sore stiff neck on OPPOSITE side of vaccine arm, spine pain and this time a fever which started at 102.4 and steadily decreased. Today is day 5 for me and it has gotten a little better each day. Pleaae consider reporting your symptoms to VAERS, i did. Sending you care!
I had my first moderna vaccine on 4 /24 ,my arm was very sore for a couple of days, and then on the first of May it was sore and kept getting worse constant pain from the top of my shoulder to the top of my hand and was red and swollen ,I finally went to my GP on the 12 and she gave me a toradol shot and a steroid shot and oral steroid for 5 days , glad to say the pain is pretty well gone , it’s a little achy in the morning but a couple of tylenol takes care of it ,But I’m scared about taking the second shot of vaccine. Anyone have the same, and what happened after second dose ,
I am experiencing the same thing. I had my second vaccination in March. I still cannot raise my arm above my head, and the pain radiates down to the top of my hand. I am going to see my doctor instead of living with the pain.
I had the same problem after the 1st shot. Received 2ndcin other arm. No problems st all.
It’s been 7 weeks since my second vaccine. The pain in my arm is getting worse by the day.
I have had awful shoulder pain since having my second AstraZeneca injection,
Hardly slept for more than 2 months, when I mentioned it to the gp on a phone appointment.
She would not even listen to me.
Same here.
Same here. I got the Moderna vaccine and tomorrow is the second shot (after 4 weeks). My arm still hurts when I do some sort of movements or exercise.
The same, 4 weeks later after Spuntik V. Sometimes it hurts even without a movement, just all of a sudden.
I had my first Moderna vaccine on January 15, 2021. The second on March 03, 2021. There is no swelling now and the red spot long gone, however deep down in the muscle it is so painful it feels just as bad as the day I got the first shots. It is only in the area and arm where I received the shot so I know that is the cause.
Hi. I’m from Russia. I had a first shot of Sputnik V four weeks ago. I postponed my second shot due to prolonged pain in the muscle. Do you think it will ever go away? I’m scared now having it again and don’t know what to do.
Hi Joni, I have the same problem. A pharmacist gave me the shot and I think she hit too high or a ligament or something.
I’m at 6 weeks post Pfizer shot #2 and still have pain when I move my arm and engage my muscle in specific directions. The pain is worse after waking in the morning.
Hi Tiffany, I had 2nd Moderna shot 10 Feb and have precisely same symptoms you do. This is not horrible, but definitely annoying. jim
Hi Jim. Do you think it will ever go away? I have the same symptoms (four weeks later) as you and Tiffany but after first shot of Sputnik V (I’m from Russia) It is very annoying and I don’t know if I should have a second one..
Hi Olga in Russia, I really do not think mine is going away. I have days when the pain in minimal and then days when it is pretty bad and kind of a range of motion problem. All I know is many here in U.S. have same complaints. I would still take the shots since I am old, 81, and do not want to do on a ventilator. I was just surprised by the side effects. Did not expect them. Will take a booster in the same arm and keep my dominant, right, one in good shape. I know if I went to a doctor they would say Oh just bursitis or arthritis because I am 81, but had no shoulder pain prior to the shot. Are many in Russia having same side effects. We think maybe the vaccine woke up our immune system and attack some latent arthritis that before was not symptomatic. Keep you sense of humor and move forward. jim in Virginia USA
Hi again Jim. Me too, I have good days and bad days when pain is prominent. I’m 31. My mum (64) had some sensibility in the area of the shot after two doses. My grandma (almost 93) had no side effects at all. I am the “lucky” one I guess haha. I searched a lot on the russian side of the internet and found basically nothing. I asked doctors, they don’t know. They say theoretically that could happen. It seems like no one in Russia is complaining about arm pain side effect. Some have it but it’s gone after 1-5 days.
Back at you Olga. I found this WebSite several months ago and it really helped to read what others were experiencing. This is the only place where I have found any information about these side effects. My doctor would not even discuss it via email. . I am glad you have a vaccine there since other countries, as you know, are really suffering. I have an annual physical in about 2 months and will have my doctor face to face and will ask some more questions, but really expect no answers. Not everyone wants to take the vaccine here unfortunately. Guess you face same thing in Russia. The disease is so harmful to people and the economy that the shot should be mandatory. I guess every country has it share of hard headed people. Good Luck. jim in Virginia
I have developed , after 10 days a stabbing chronic pain my my deltoid, injection site. I am 67 and have a few ache s and pains but this is a bit different, could it be a delayed reaction to the injection?
Hello,
Has anyone had an extremely delayed reaction to the vaccine? I received my 2nd Moderna dose on Feb 2nd and JUST NOW have been having extreme pain in and around the injection site. I have stabbing pain and unable to lift my arm. even leaning my arm on my desk to type is very painful. I also have a burning sensation up my arm into my neck.
I didn’t have any major side effects immediately after my vaccination
I received my second Moderna injection on March 9, and experienced normal flu-like symptoms the next day. They went away quickly. However, in early May I developed a burning sensation at the injection site, and elbow pain which my doctor diagnosed as “Golfer’s Elbow.” He advised cold compresses, pain medication and to rest the arm. I have followed his instructions but as of mid-June the pain is severe. I was injured by a vaccine shot administered too high up in my left arm five years ago, for which I was compensated. I now make sure to inform whoever gives me a vaccine to make sure it is appropriately placed, and only in my right arm. I have had numerous flu shots since my injury, with no issues. I have recently scheduled physical therapy for the golfer’s elbow, am hoping it helps.
I had my second Moderna shot in Feb. with some arm soreness for a few days. My arm has been fine for over 2 1/2 months, but started hurting again 2 days ago. It feels exactly like it did after the shot. Hurts to raise my arm/skin hurts/itching/etc.
Hi Lisa, Received my second Moderno 10 Feb and since about 14 Feb have had a sore shoulder off an on. It continues today. Not a delayed reaction, but just a reaction. I am old and the doc will tell me it is just arthritis although had no pain prior to the shots. I will get a booster in my left army so I have one functional arm left, my right. I would laugh, but it is not really funny. Too many with same symptoms.
I received the 2nd dose of the Pfizer vaccine 9 weeks ago and was surprised that 2 days ago I began to experience pain in my injection site. It was as if I had just gotten the shot. Thankfully, this pain was gone within 24 hours. On the other hand, I have had pain, burning sensations, and feelings of pins and needles that move from my shoulder, upper arm, and armpit for the past 9 weeks. I have learned from this forum that SIRVA may be the cause of my discomfort.
Hi All. I wanted to let the people who are experiencing extended arm/shoulder pain know that there is a Facebook page called: SIRVA- Shoulder Injury Related to Vaccine Administration. It’s a private page, and you need to answer a few questions before joining.
SIRVA encompasses various shoulder injuries (resulting in tendinitis, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, impingement syndrome, etc.), with pain being intermittent or constant, or a nerve related issue in the arm/hand. I didn’t initially think I was dealing with SIRVA but after more research and hearing about varying cases, now I know I am. There are sadly a good number of people joining this FB page after their COVID vaccines. It might be a good source of information if you think it’s possible you’ve sustained a vaccine injury. I hope we all heal as quickly as possible.
I’ve been following this discussion forum since mid March after experiencing intense swelling and pain in my shoulder, upper arm and armpit on the side I received my second Pfizer dose on March 7. Everything I read or heard about the side effects before and after I got my shot were definitely not what my experience has been. On 3/7, I received my 2nd dose and within 12 hours I had a 103 degree fever that lasted 2 days. The day after my fever broke, the swelling and discomfort started in my armpit. As if my armpit discomfort wasn’t enough, pain in my shoulder and surrounding muscles became so intense that I had to sit upright if I wanted to sleep. The shoulder pain was definitely worse at night. The armpit swelling subsided after 6 weeks, but the shoulder and muscle pain continues to this day. Strangely, the pain moves around in my shoulder and all over my upper arm. The one place I feel discomfort most of the time is where my bicep attaches to the inside of my upper arm and shoulder. I continue to use an ice pack and ibuprofen which provide me temporary relief. In the past couple of days, I’m experiencing occasional pins and needles sensations in my shoulder and upper arm. Yesterday, the spot of my injection was very painful, and I hadn’t experienced this pain in a long time..
Today, that pain disappeared. I am posting my experience because reading about the experiences of others in this forum has helped me cope with the past 9 weeks and maybe my experience will help someone else make sense of these vaccine side effects.
Hi All. I’ve been replying to some people’s comments directly but haven’t posted here on the general discussion in about a month. I received my second Pfizer vaccine on February 19th and have been dealing with pain and achiness in my shoulder region, clavicle, underarm, upper back/shoulder blade area since. The pain moves around, only in those areas on my vaccinated side. I’ve been to my PCP, a rheumatologist, and 2 orthopedic surgeons. I had a cortisone shot a month ago in my shoulder joint, felt pretty much complete relief 3 weeks later, but I’m feeling something creep back the last couple of days. I know a lot of us are presenting differently but I was thinking possibly a Facebook group page could help us stay connected and support one another a little easier. I’m really grateful for this article and forum but it’s tough to respond to people or know when someone has responded to us without any sort of notification system. If anyone would like to stay connected on a different platform, please let me know. We can share what’s working and what’s not, which could help us both physically and mentally. I’m not the savviest tech wise but creating a FB page can’t be too tough I assume. 😁
Lisa, I’m experiencing the same thing that you are. A fb page would be great
I answered you below, but I think some sort of facebook page would be very helpful, but I am not tech savy either.
Received the 1st Pfizer vaccine on 5/7, very easy, barely felt injection. About 2 hours later, arm soreness at site was felt. About 6 or more hours started feeling underarm pain, checked underarm no swelling. Day later arm soreness/still underarm pain, rechecked underarm and noticed swelling. Very concerned but see that this reaction has happen in some people. Will wait a few days before contacting doctor.
I haven’t posted for a month but the left arm pain from the first Astra Zeneca jab did go after 7 to 8 weeks. Here in the UK the second dose is administered 12 weeks after the first and 1 week after my second dose – in my right arm – things are following pretty much the same pattern as before.
I think it would be helpful to us all if the original article could be updated. By now there must be more information out there.
I’m sorry to hear you’re going through this again, David. I’ve been thinking ahead to boosters, when we need them, and I’m dreading the thought. Do you wish now you would have stuck to the same arm? I had no issue with the first vaccine in my left arm. I opted for the right on my second, and I’ve pretty much made up my mind that I’ll never get a vaccine in my right arm again …but maybe it’s better to stick with the injured side. I don’t know what I’ll do if I end up with two bad shoulders. 😣 Is your pain migrating again?
Hi Lisa, My second Moderno 10 Feb. Both in left arm and left shoulder still very sore as of yesterday. Some days not so much. Agree, I will keep my dominant arm, right one, secure and get a booster in the left preserving one arm fully. Looks like a long term problem to me.
Hi Jim. I’m sorry to hear you’re still suffering too. I thought I was almost out of the woods after a cortisone shot but my pain today is now fully back, a month after the cortisone. I shifted my research focus onto SIRVA – which has been mentioned here a lot- and I agree with what Brooke has said … I think a lot of us may be dealing with SIRVA to varying degrees. I’ve changed my theory here a bunch but now that I’ve read more about how it can present and specific cases, I’m starting to think I ran into some really bad luck and this is a vaccine injury. It sounds like many others are in my boat as well. So the saga continues… 😔 best of luck to you.
First scientific medical article about the Covid vaccine and Sirva just published. I have seen other articles about Sirva and other vaccines, but this is the first about The Covid vaccine.

A month after my second jab I get extreme pain on shoulder adduction as well as lifting any weight through the same arm. I had no problems after my first shot other than that night I couldn’t lay on that arm but this resolved in less than 24 hours. My second shot however am am having persistent severe pain on adduction . I wonder if its less to do with the vaccine and more to do with the technique and placement of the shot .
I also think it has to do with how the injection is given. The first injection was just a pick and I had nothing unexpected. The second was given too forcefully. Now weeks later have sore swollen arm and down into hand . I went to urgent care and was given steroid and antibiotic. I have finished taking them. Still have same issue.
I truly believe shot placement (too high towards the shoulder) and/or the depth of shot are the underlining causations, as I have very similar symptoms.
I experienced the exact same problem!
I got my 2nd Moderna shot on Feb 9 and here we are May 6 and I still have shoulder , arm, tendon and muscle pain. I also have to lay my right arm a certain way to sleep at night and sometimes have to help lift up my right arm with my left hand. I haven’t been to the doctor as I thought it all had to do with my tendonitis acting up as I am working in front of a computer all day. But now that I have read comments below, I now know it is from the Moderna vaccine.
I could be wrong, but I truly believe shot placement (too high towards the shoulder joint) and/or the depth of shot are the underlining causations, as I have very similar symptoms.
Connie,
I am so sorry you are suffering I have been suffering since Feb 24. I never had a shoulder problem before. Please go to the doctor for an evaluation.
Hi Connie, I got my 2nd Moderna shot 10 Feb and also continue to have a sore shoulder. Some days it is very sore, some days not so much. I have not been to a doctor either, but find a heating pad helps when it is really sore. My theory is the vaccine caused my immune system to react to some latent arthritis in my left arm that before had not caused any symptoms whatsoever. If you read these posts many have had the same reaction so thee must be some cause and effect here. I am disappointed that the medical community tends to gloss over these complaints. I would get the vaccine again, but would appreciate a little more transparency from the medical community about side effects. You can not tell me they are not aware of these and do not have info they should share with all of us. I think I will get the booster in my left arm also so I have one functional arm. LOL.
May be worth a consideration: https://ccandh.com/vaccines-and-shoulder-injuries/
Am thinking that the cocksure kid that jabbed me went too high and too deep. Young military MD or med tech.. used to dealing with men’s bulked up deltiods, not a post-menopausal woman’s arm. Got me in the least bulky part of my shoulder. The thinly-muscled end. I jumped away, as INSTANTLY as he was administering the shot, I had nerve shooters down the top of my arm and have been dealing with alternating numbness and itching between my index and ring fingers and it is horrible when I stop moving. (Though TBH, last time I went to the dentist, the novocaine shot left me with an achy jaw for almost 2 weeks afterwards, so there is that..) Thankfully my work is fairly physical, so once I start pushing boxes and lifting paint cans up over my head and onto high shelves, it all goes away. Night time is pain-squared though. So far 3 days post Janssen (J&J) shot, and other than my arm feeling like it did when it was dislocated some 30 years ago, everything else is ducky.
I am really thinking the “to high or too deep” is the common denotator. My injection site was much higher than usual and I also felt immediate pain when injected with the needle and then more pain when the vaccine was given. Pain shot down my outer arm to my my elbow. Before I left CVS the pain was radiating from the injection site down to my forearm, so I guess I am lucky it stopped there. Didn’t think much about it the rest of the day just keep working. That night I woke in severe pain and couldn’t move my arm at all without making the pain much worst. I had to hold my arm in place just to get out of bed, as nay use of arm muscles would make things much worst.
I am only 9 days out from receiving the second vaccine shot and it has gotten slightly better, but still hurts a lot at times and I find Aleve helps more than the other over the counter meds. Good Luck
Well it’s been awhile since I updated. My Moderna shot was feb 24. Experienced extreme pain and extreme weakness in my left shoulder and scapular shoulder region. I finally had an intraarticlar injection April 19, in the shoulder joint. After around 3 days I felt 75% better. I was in heaven. I started physical therapy 10 days later and now I am worse than before the injection. I am so depressed. I really can’t live like this.
Hi Brooke. I got a corticosteroid injection in my shoulder joint on April 8th. It took a full 3 weeks for me to start feeling the benefits. I definitely felt worse and regretted getting the steroid injection but I hit the 3 week mark and it then it finally made all the difference. I’m still taking a prescription NSAID as well (500 mg Naproxen twice daily). Do they have you on an anti-inflammatory? My shoulder felt really, really achy and full for weeks after the cortisone shot… I guess some people get a cortisone flare and it can last longer than what most websites tell us. Give it a little more time and hopefully you’ll feel some relief. I’ve talked to other people with shoulder injuries that have had success with Meloxicam as well. I do know they say people should consistently take an NSAID for weeks to get the full benefit. Again, check with your doc of course… but just passing on what I’ve heard from medical folks, as well as people who have dealt with shoulder injuries in the past. Hang in there and I really hope you get some relief soon.
Hi Lisa,
Thanks for responding. It’s just so depressing. I never had any problem with my shoulder before. Do you have a lot of weakness. I do and I have atrophy all around my shoulder with dimples and indentations in weird spots. It almost looks like tissue has been eaten away. Sirva is much more common than many think, whichnis what many of us have. It really needs to be addressed in the national news. I have seen, some mention of it, but not much. Are you going to PT??
Hi Brooke. No, I’m not going to PT. The ortho who administered my cortisone shot gave me at home exercises to do and told me to follow up 6 weeks later with him if I wasn’t improving. I felt really good this last week but the last couple of days – soon after I sent you the first message, I’m feeling something creep back, not pain, but tightness and a dull ache in my trap, posterior deltoid and back. Has your pain moved around? That’s what’s so odd about mine. Mine has been shoulder, underarm, chest, back – all on the vaccinated side and it moves around in those areas. The ortho said that can be referred pain and thinks the source is my shoulder. My MRI is consistent with impingement but no doc I’ve seen believes it’s related to the vaccine, even though I’ve been dealing with this since Feb. 19th, the day of my second vaccine. I, myself don’t really feel like I present like the SIRVA cases I’ve read about – I have full range of motion and I don’t notice weakness. I believe the vaccine triggered something that was asymptomatic but who the heck knows. It’s frustrating and like you said, depressing. I do think a lot of people here may be dealing with SIRVA like you though. Where are you located? I think there is a doc in California who specializes in SIRVA cases and has been really successful in treating them. I found out about him when I was trying to google self diagnose :), on a SIRVA website. If you’d like, we can connect on FB or IG and direct message there and keep in touch. I’ve connected with another really sweet woman who posted here on the article and we stay in touch on FB messenger and the support helps, even though she and I are dealing with different side effects/injuries.
Hi Lisa, First of all, I have to say that I am so sorry that you think your symptoms are creeping back. You must feel so discouraged. I think there are all kinds or “Sirva” symptoms, not every person has the same presentation. My symptoms are very odd. Yes, my pain moves around and sometimes the worst is exactly what you described!! “ache in the trap, posterior deltoid and back.” That is what I was dealing with yesterday, it was horrible. It seems to be above my scapular. It’s an odd type of pain. I have been wondering if it has to do with weakness and the surrounding muscles overworking, I do not know. Once I had pain in my chest and I felt as though I could not take a deep breath without pain. I ended up in the ER and was told it was muscle spasms from the injury due to the vaccine. I actually spoke to that doctor in California. I live on the east coast, so it would not be easy for me to see him. How would we connect on facebook. Thank you.
Hi Lisa, Agree, do not think it is SIRVA either. Too many have the same side effects. Three months after second Moderno continue with sore shoulder on and off. Some days minimal some days max pain. I have an 83 year old friend who will not get the shot and I can not in good faith construct an argument to convince her. She already has significant arthritis and I am afraid side effect would be a huge problem. Personally I will get a booster, but not happy about the lack of side effect info available when obviously many have problems. Again, my take is the vaccine stimulates the immune system to look for vulnerabilities like latent arthritis. I have not been to a doc and am a three time cancer survivor and not a whiner. I do recognize cause and effect. Be well.
Had Pfizer shot January 16. It is now May 4. My left arm remains sore with shooting pains down to my hand. It has also radiated up to my shoulder, upper back, and neck. It is miserable and interferes with work and sleep. I ibuprofen doesn’t touch it. Hope they figure this out soon!
I had the Pfizer vaccine 6 weeks ago, no side effects until 2 weeks ago, my left arm is sore all the time, if I have no where to rest my arm my hand starts shaking as if it has a life of it’s own, I have to go on Wednesday for my second jab, I am very dubious about going for it now
I have the same, into my neck which is as stiff and sore as my arm. My left hand is weak and tingly. I make jewelry for a living and game as a hobby – have not been able to do either since the shot. The only relief i get is while a new ice pack is on it and even then not completely. I have a dr appt tomorrow to get it checked and most likely blood and imaging tests afterwards. I had the Moderna vaccine on April 23rd and am due for my 2nd on the 21st. Scared to go back.
I received the J&J vaccine March 10, ’21 and have experienced pain in the injection arm, my left arm, since then. This is horrible. I’ll need to go to a doctor sometime, because this chronic arm pain is limiting function of my arm. Any movement of my left arm causes pain. This is what can happen when you become a “Guinea Pig.”
Had 1st Pfizer Feb 11. Still have upper arm/shoulder pain both sides every day. Occasional hamstring pain both sides. Had many more areas involved, but the rest have mostly resolved. Have reported to Pfizer. Left messages w/ primary twice. Understand this is all new, but would like to know actual cause of pain to try to understand. NOT looking forward to booster at this point.
Same here 1st moderna dose, arm discomfort showed after 10 days approximately, today is my second those and my arm still hurts, cant raise it past 80 degrees. how long it has lasted for you? did you needed medication?
My first shot Pfizer was at the end of January. The Muscle still hurts after 4 months. I have to sleep with my arm hanging down off the bed, and its also hard to put my left arm behind my back. I have used a heating pad on it and have taken Naproxen nothing has worked.
Hi Diane, Same as you since February 6. It is getting somewhat better. I put Diclofenac sodium 1% gel on my shoulder and upper arm every night and take acetaminophen. Sometimes I can sleep a few hours.
I’m so glad to read this! I have had the same issue. I got my shot on March 8. Here it is, May 2, and I still cannot left my arm up all the way. I can’t reach behind my back, and I can’t sleep on it.
I got my first shot in my non-dominant shoulder on March 13th. Now it’s May 3rd and I still have pain and weakness in the muscle. Most pronounced when attempting shoulder presses or pull-ups. I also have a lingering pain on the left side of my jaw. Not sure how these would be related but they seem to both have come on since the first shot. Had my second shot April 2nd in dominant arm and no pain whatsoever in that arm.
I got Pfizer 2nd dose on 04/25 and I’ve arm pain till today (05/05). Took Tynenol, Ibuprofen etc but no relief. Please help if anyone have idea how to get rid of it
had my J&J shot april 9th yesterday and today I cant move my arm past my middle of my side very sore like i got hit with a bat? is this common what should I do
