Had my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine 8 days ago. No issues on the day of the vaccine, but had a slick spot appear on my hip / side of buttocks directly inline with my arm where the vaccine was administered. 3 days passed and the same spot became a hot red spot with the upper level of skin appearing to blister / fold. The same day the taste buds on the back of my tongue became enlarged and sores were seen in my throat. I visited the ER that night and everything checked out. The ER doctor couldn’t make heads or tails of it. The day after the incident I have had random sweats and I am tired. Still moving forward with the second dose. I am sure the virus is far worst then these odd experiences.
How can you be sure the virus is worse? Most of the time, the virus is like a bad cold or flu. Often there are no symptoms at all. We might have been told it’s a deadly virus, but most of the time it is not.
I’ve been searching for any advice or comments left by someone in the same predicament. I received the first Pfizer vaccine 3/12/21 and the second one yesterday, 4/1/21. After my first shot, my arm was sore for a week, and after the pain subsided, it was still sore if touched for the next 2 weeks. Yesterday I felt fine aside from the initial pain, but today I woke up with hives on my upper lip. I take Taltz once/month for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. My shot was due today, but I held off because I’m not sure what to do. My doctor’s office is closed, and I don’t feel that a swollen lip, head, and body aches warrant a trip to the ER. Has anyone had similar experience? Thanks!!
I was due for my 2nd Moderna dose Wednesday. I woke up with a broken blood vessel in my eye and it unnerved me because I’ve never had that before in my life. I’m 53. The doctor said it was normal and nothing to worry about but did a CBC just to ease my concern. I read you can wait up to 6 weeks after the first dose to get the second so I think I’m going to do that because I have to be out of town for work and don’t want to risk getting sick after the second dose when I’m in a different state. What did you end up doing?
My second Moderna was on March 31. Among a list of terrible side effects with the first shot on 2/24/21 and the last one on 3/31/21, I awakened at 3:00 a.m. on Easter Sunday with a huge fever blister on the left corner of my mouth and one inside my mouth. I have not had a fever blister since I was a child. I have never had one on the inside of my mouth. I am 70 years old.
Absolutely nothing surprises me about what has happened since this vaccine entered my previously very healthy body.
Thank you so much Joanne for posting this information. I have been reading as much as I possibly can about the vaccines here in the U.S. since January. I am very puzzled and still trying to figure out what is happening to some people. I’ve read many accounts of people reporting similar things as you, but when they go to the ER or their family doctor, everything seems in the normal range. I simply cannot figure it out, ie: how verified bodily readings can be in a dangerous range one moment and normal in the next moment. I am absolutely so confused (as are many people) as to how this could be. Some of the wide bodily variances in a moment’s time include:
Pulse Rate
Oxygen saturation rates
Heart rates
Temperature
Several of these moment-to-moment wide bodily variances have happened to people that I know personally.
Has anyone ever reported home pulse/ox results while recovering from a 2nd Moderna shot?
Short history — I’m a medical writer. I’m an active 65. Bought a good quality pulse/ox a year ago, once I learned COVID affected the lungs. (Was hospitalized 8 days for pneumonia years ago, when O2 sat reached 89.)
My standard O2 sat is around 98 or 99. I take readings at rest, allow 2-3 mins for the readings to settle. I don’t check readings every day, just enough to understand what my “normal” is.
My 1st shot was fine, very minor side effects, kept working.
My second shot was Tues March 30th. 12 hours later, felt like a truck hit me and was out of work 2 days. Worst headache ever, everything hurt (muscles/joints/eyes/ears), injection site pain, soaking night sweats, low-grade fever (100.9 max).
Decided to use the pulse/ox for those 2 days and wish I’d taken pictures/video of how it acted. It’s given stable O2 readings for the last year. For the past 2 days, it never settled on any single reading for more than a few seconds, even after giving it the usual 2-3 minutes to settle in to a %. It sometimes switched numbers second by second, and not always by a reading of 1, either.
Most readings were 93, 94, 92, 91, 89. It was even at 86 for about 10 seconds — that was the lowest it went. I never felt short of breath during any of this.
I’m back at work today, and my resting O2 sat has started rising, up to around 96/97 now.
PS- my resting pulse rate also took a hit during the past 2 days, but at least it stayed pretty consistent around 99 (my normal resting pulse rate is around 78)
So is there any info you’re aware of that’s tracking O2 desaturation after vaccine dosing? Nothing’s on PubMed.
Thanks so much, glad you’re collecting info.
Wow. Finally found someone whose experience matches mine.
First Moderna shot was uneventful.
Second shot was at 8:30 am. Around 6:30 pm, the fever came (getting to 102 F at its highest). But along with it, something else–a racing heart. 110-120 bpm at rest. My normal is 65-75 bpm. And because I was using a pulse oximeter to check my heart rate, my attention was drawn to my oxygen saturation as well. It kept moving between 94% and 98%, with most readings 95% or 96%. (For the last year the readings have been stable at 98%, and I didn’t own an oximeter before that.)
It felt like the oximeter had become unstable. I changed out the batteries, but the results stayed the same. When it did stay at one reading for some time, it was 96%, not my normal 98%. Add to this my thumping, racing heart, and I had a night to remember. I went out–feverish and fearful–at 1:30 am to shop for a different pulse oximeter. Couldn’t find one, but came back with a rapid antigen self-test and some Tylenol (didn’t have any medicine at home before this). Tested negative for Covid. Some reassurance, not much.
Took one 500 mg Tylenol and lay down. Heart rate went down to the 90s sometime that night, and stayed at 80-90 the next day. This day was good for oxygen–it stayed at a stable 98%. Early that day, I drove to a drive-through testing site and had my nose swabbed for an RT-PCR test. Took a couple of Tylenols in the daytime and again late at night. Sometime during the night (second night after vaccine), oxygen went down to 96%-97% (switching between the two), and has frequently been at 97% during the ensuing day (today). Luckily heart rate has been almost normal today. This morning the RT-PCR test came back negative. This makes me confident I don’t have Covid, and less freaked out about the oxygen numbers.
This is all that’s happened so far. 2.5 days since second shot.
I just received my second dose yesterday. The shoulder I received it in is very slightly sore, and I mean just noticeable and nothing more. About as minor as can be, yet be noticed. After the first dose I had no reaction at all, not even soreness. Today I feel fine other than the shoulder.
My experience with the Pfizer vaccine is far from what I expected. I shared this information before, but not on med shadow. Med Shadow also has an article with a great deal of comments on arm pain post Covid vaccine. That is where I found a few people with some of my symptoms. Pfizer vaccine #1–I was tired and in bed for 24 hours and my arm hurt but it all went away within 48 hours. On 3-15, I received the second vaccine and I was lethargic and in bed asleep for 2 days so I thought I was going to be lucky. Well, as it turns out, my under arm on the opposite side of the vaccine felt swollen -although there did not seem to be swollen lymph nodes. The pain extended into my shoulder and ribs. The rib pain is still present three weeks later as is the under arm discomfort. I went to get X-Rays and blood work. Everything was fine and then I just started prednisone after the full two week mark to help with the pain.
My PCP–felt it was fine to take the steroids after the full 2 weeks. After the third day of steroids, I can honestly say that I feel 30 percent better but certainly not anywhere near where I thought I would be. I am seeing my PCP next week and I will share whatever else I learn but I am concluding that I will need a CT scan or MRI-we shall see. I have a heating pad on my ribs on the opposite side of vaccine as well. In the past, I have had costochondritis and at this point, what is supposed to be a temporary diagnosis seems to be chronic now. While I am not trying to instill fear in others because I do believe that getting the vaccine is an intelligent move in the right direction, it has not been a good experience for me.
Thanks to Emma–for allowing us all to share on this platform. I have always given myself credit for handling pain well and I can not take pain medications because they make me ill. But the pain I am experiencing now and for the last three weeks has me homebound almost everyday and I will continue seeking help in the medical field until I find some type of solution. If I uncover anything worth sharing, I most definitely will. As of right now, I believe that the second vaccine triggered some sort of immune response in my body that is causing this pain but I am sure that this is a lot better than getting COVID. I am sharing my story because it’s important to know that we may all have different responses, but people need to know about these reactions that seem to last a very long time. Take care everyone and I certainly hope that we all find answers/solutions to our individual reactions. I truly feel that the medical field is just learning about all of this and therefore we are still part of the experiment… again, I am not discouraging anyone from getting vaccinated. I totally encourage this but it’s important to share our reactions so others know as well. Stay safe and let’s all try our best to think positive so that our bodies and minds can heal.
Emma,
Have posted several questions after total hearing loss within 24 hrs of my first covid vaccine shot. Can anyone tell me if there is any information about prednisone’s effect on the effectiveness of the Vaccine shot??
Jerry, has your hearing come back to 100% yet? Thanks. How are you doing? How old are you if I may ask?
Thai-
Thank you for asking. No, my hearing has not returned, my ENT thinks it will not, at least if my sudden hearing loss follows the norm! However, I’m hopeful that the Vaccine caused loss will be different, but again not holding my breath. I’m 75 years young! Still getting used too my hearing aid in right ear. Thanks again!
Information is limited. There’s a chance that steroids could reduce the efficacy of the vaccine (particularly if given shortly before or after) since they do suppress the immune system to an extent, but there isn’t much evidence of it right now. Best, of course, to have a healthcare provider review the risks and benefits of your specific situation and timeline.
Emma,
Thank you very much for your answer to my question. it was 10 or 11 days after my shot that I started the steriods. My ENT is also struggling to find information. Thanks again!
Jerry, I am so sorry your hearing loss seems permanent! That is terrible for you. Is it only in one ear? Can you hear the TV, people talking and have normal conversation? Praying it gets better soon!
The hearing loss is only the left ear. Being a farmer my hearing was not great before this. I can hear with right ear at about 80%. I do have trouble in conversation when the sound is to my left. I did get a hearing aid for my right ear and their are different options to go with it. Just giving it time to get accustomed to it. Thank you for your prayers and concern. Do you have hearing loss due to the vaccine?
About five days after getting the second Pfizer shot I developed an extremely itchy rash on my torso. It’s lasted two weeks so far with little improvement.
Emma
Any idea as to how long these extended side effects last in general? Doctor tells me they will resolve just does not know how long….
Unfortunately I’m not aware of any definitive answers to that question at the moment.
They seem to be very common.
Indigo Blue. I found out I have low Vitamin D. My value was 18.6 ng/ml. This is nearly considered deficient. I will find out my magnesium level later today. I am betting it is also low. These two items could explain my twitching and weakness. I have begun taking vitamin d supplement (10,000 IU) and 500 mg of magnesium per day. Also, a good hot soak in epsom salt to absorb some more magnesium through a different way other than oral. This might be a long shot assumption, but magnesium is required for protein synthesis. These new mrna vaccines tell our bodies to produce a protein that is similar to the virus. I wonder if the vaccine depleted my magnesium, and is the cause for these quivers, twitches, spasms, weakness, insomnia, anxiety, and heart palputations. But for anyone reading this with similar symptoms, read about vitamin supplements first before you start taking these. It could be harmful if you do it wrong. I will keep everyone updated with the magnesium levels.
I am an advocate for alternatives. However what the poster above states is not founded on any definitive studies. Every person’s immune system is different although there are varying catagories of response.
Reactions are more likely due to the bodies immune response to the Antigen or any of the ingredients/adjuvants and not lack of vitamins or minerals. Also not sure that one absorbs any meaningful amount of magnesium through ones skin. Too much magnesium orally can make one drowsy, make your bowels relax, cause diarrhea and throw off other minerals.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I have no idea if this vaccine was the issue of my twitching and anxiety or not. I do agree that magnesium being absorbed through the skin needs further investigation. I just know one hot bath seemed to help. Very possible it was a placebo effect. Anyways, my doctor stated that a Vitamin D deficiency is likely the cause of twitching and anxiety. He sees it often. They put me on a once a week dose of Vit D of 50,000 IU. Plus told me i could confine to take 5,000 IU for the other 6 days. They suggested taking about 250-500 mg of magnesium along with this. They said there are studies that show that magnesium is needed in order to absorb the Vit D, especially in high doses. I haven’t noticed any issues with bowels yet. I will be sure to watch that so thanks for mentioning it.
We did discuss what Vit D does, and the top two things were that it allows calcium in the blood to move into the bones (where it is 99% present in). If Vit D is low, it allows the calcium to remain in the veins and arteries. This causes calcification and increases neurotransmitters. This could likely be a cause for the twitching.
It was also discussed that Vit D is responsible for protein synthesis. Now, the mRna vaccines specifically instruct our bodies to duplicate proteins that are similar to the spike protein like the Sars Cov2. So it could be possible that this sudden instruction of creating this prison l protein required Vit D and possibly lowered it? No clue here, just a thought. Whatever the case, I’m glad the deficiency was identified and is being corrected. Like I said before, who knows if this was the cause. Discussion of symptoms never hurts and might help someone who is dealing with similar issues. I wouldn’t have known to look into a Vit D issue unless Indigo Blue mentioned it. I had to ask my doctor to run it. He was at first relunctant to because all other bloodwork was normal. Hope everyone has a great Easter weekend.
Hi Mike, did your twitching resolve?
Ashley just an update here it is june 29 and the twitching is still ongoing. Mainly in my calves. Its driving me nuts. A neurologist thinks I have benign fasiculation syndrome but he can’t say for sure.
Hi ashley. It’s now May 13, and the twitching hasn’t stopped. I’m trying different types of Vitamin D (i was deficient) to try to get my levels up. I was also low on b12, which helps repair nerves.
Hi Mike,
It was a good idea to find out about your vitamin D levels and to aim to optimize your levels. Be guided by your doctor in terms of doses of the supplements you are taking. Too much magnesium can cause diarrhoea.
My Vit D was 27.7 ( the ideal being above 30ng/mL) and my magnesium and potassium were normal at the onset of my symptoms. My calcium shot up slightly when the twitching started and then was found to be normal when re-checked two days later. Because of the low vit D, I did a coeliac screen ( blood test) and that came back normal.
The plethora of side effects which I experienced , and so acutely ( 48 hours after the vaccine) could in no way be explained by just a slightly low vit D. I don’t want to be so brazen as to speculate in your case, and your hypothesis about the vaccine possibly triggering a shift in magnesium ( or indeed other minerals) and thus causing some symptoms is food for thought. It would be interesting to see how your symptoms change as your vit D levels come up. Perhaps the vaccine has the ability to affect our ion channels at least temporarily.
I am still getting some random, mild muscle twitching. Now, when they occur, I immediately try to distract myself mentally and it seems (interestingly) to shorten the duration of the twitching. If it is even to look at a painting on the wall and try to marvel at the colours.
Bizarrely, occasionally at nights for the past 3 weeks, I am awoken by a sharp transient pain at my left upper molars. The dentist can find nothing wrong.
Nearly nine weeks on and the arm in which I received the injection still aches from time to time. It is not tender and I can move it without any pain.
I am happy for all those who sailed through one or both doses of any of the covid vaccines unscathed. My body is truly hating this Pfizer vaccine, but it is putting up a good fight to try to get me back to health or at least to keep me functioning.
Go body go! 🙂
Sharon
Not to throw a damper on things, but I began taking 2000IU of Vitamin D3 last April 2020 and still got pounded by side effects after Moderna shot#2.
You name and I got it…..everything except the rash and they lasted for over 4 weeks.
I believe the recommended dose of Vitamin D3 is only 800IU per day (read that somewhere) so plz be careful not to OD on it. They really need to do more studies on supplements imo, and now is a good time.
My understanding is that the side effects are coming from our body’s reactions to a foreign invader…..Not necessarily how that “invader” was introduced to our bodies to make the new antibodies. (ie: which vaccine was taken)
Since Covid is totally new to our immune systems; the reactions can be extreme. (I have NO medical background)
My last Moderna Shot was at the end of February and I am back to 99%. I still get tired during the day and need a nap. I also am sleeping about 1.5 hrs longer than normaI which coulkd be due to my age (over 70) and/or DST in the USAS.
After the first dose of the pfizer vaccine I felt literally nothing – not even arm soreness – I ran a scheduled marathon the next day and felt amazing. After the second dose I felt fine the day of, and had a very slight headache and nausea the next day which resolved itself on the third day. I usually react to other vaccines (except the flu vax) poorly, so was very happy to have virtually no reaction to pfizer.
Got my 1st Moderna shot March 25th and 2min. Later I started having rapid heartbeat and now 5 days after I’ve been to the ER twice all results come back ok just being told that my body is reacting to the vaccine. I keep having episodes of palpitations and high blood pressure along with watery eyes.
Hi Kristin, please see thread number 276. Me and two others have shared this same issue of horrible insomnia after receiving Moderna vaccine and Maren has posted some encouraging news today. Hope you and we all get our sleep back soon.
I had the Johnson & Johnson shot on March 11th. About 7 hours later I felt very fatigued. Went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night with one of the worst migraines I have had. The following day I continued with the migraine and began vomiting every hour or two. Couldn’t keep any food or water down. This continued for about 20 hours. I am a migraine/headache sufferer so it didn’t surprise me that the whole shot experience triggered a major migraine. What has surprised me is that since the shot (3 weeks) I continue to have a headache or migraine every day. I normally get 1-2 headaches a week, some of them migraines. My migraine medicine (Ubrelvy) usually takes care of the pain, but I am concerned that they have increased (double or more) since my shot. I hope it goes away soon.
Sandra, I would definitely go see your GP about the new episodes migraines if they are still happening.
I am not a “headache “person but I did have headaches with the J&J. For the first week I had very bad headaches and sometime they happened in the wee hours of the morning. A cross between sinus and head. Sometimes I would wake up and go out to my living room and sit and wait. It was exasperated by any small amount of drinking. Disrupted my sleep. It took several weeks to go away. They severity tapered with the days out. I took Motrin a few times and toughed it through.
I have seen possibly 3 comments on J&J vaccine. Is this because there are no bad side effects?
Hi Les,
According to the clinical trial data, J&J patients experience fewer side effects than Moderna and Pfizer patients (at the trade off of slightly less protection from infection.) However, the disparity in comments is likely also be because this article was originally written months ago, long before J&J was authorized, so many commenters received Moderna or Pfizer before J&J was available.
Emma
I also want to add that it ( J&J) does not necessarily have less protection than the others. No I do not work for J&J or have any affiliation. I read the data extensively because I am worried for myself and family. The studies on Pfizer and Moderna were done much earlier on in the Pandemic when there were less variants. They also had different demographics than J&J. So it is like comparing apples to oranges. J&J had a broader demographic and they also did their studies in countries that had variants. It would be wise to read the data.
I have had those same thoughts. If a person has an untoward reaction or is searching and comes across this website they are likely to post.
I was concerned about side effects and that is what led me to this site. I think it has nothing to do with how long ago the article was written.
There are other factors like search engines and the likes but I think people are still having reactions and still searching the web for answers.
Hi Edna,
I am the author of the article. The reason that the timing of the article is important is because many people who started commenting on this article got their vaccines before J&J was available. Everyone who got the vaccine early on (outside of clinical trials) in the US got Moderna or Pfizer so especially in the earlier comments, you are unlikely to see anything about J&J.
As for the information about J&J being less protective or equivalent to the other two, you are correct that there are some variables between the studies that makes comparing them challenging. We can only compare them as best we can for now.
I got my first Moderna vaccine dose on March 16 2021. I have had persistent insomnia since that date. It is really hard to fall asleep. I have been taking night time sleep aids to help but even with a strong dose of sleeping medication I am struggling to sleep. I have had a bit of brain fog too. Sensitivity to sound and dizziness. I am not sure if the insomnia is causing those symptoms or if they are a part of the side effects to the vaccine. Hoping the second dose does not prolong my insomnia as I am desperate to get better sleep.
Hi Kristin,
Has your insomnia improved? I have had it since 12 days now with no improvement. See thread # 276 for more comments on this issue.
Hi Mike,
I am glad my posts helped you in some way. I do understand the feelings of anxiety. However, I am improving weekly. The twitches are much less intense and seem to now mainly occur at nights. The muscle cramps have subsided. I can now carry shopping bags again and go for walks in excess of 30 min.
In addition to the hyperbaric oxygen treatments of which I had four, and the course of prednisone ( maximum 10mg /day for 2 weeks). I found alpha lipoic acid capsules ( 600mg/dy) helpful and Nexium ( esomeprazole) also alleviated my stomach discomfort.
I also maximized my intake of good old nutritious greens such as collard greens ( I honestly never knew they could taste so good!). They are packed full of essential vitamins and minerals.
This dreadful experience has taught me to respect my body in a whole new way. My body is a temple and so is yours.
Wishing you a full and speedy recovery.
Indigo.
VAERS is our national list of adverse reactions to all vaccines. It was created by our government many years ago primarily in response to childhood vaccine adverse reactions. That is the best place to report your reaction and to see other reactions. It’s a huge list and shows all of the minor and major reactions that people report along with more details (when, how long after vaccine, type of reaction, etc.). I do not think this page is an official government list like VAERS. Check it out at https://vaers.hhs.gov
VAERS is an important place to report side effects, however the information there is not currently likely accurately representative of how many side effects are happening. A Harvard study done long ago found that only 1% of side effects are being reported there.
The CDC apparently did not take any of Harvard‘s advice on improving the system, which is inexcusable in my opinion.
It wouldn’t be difficult to make it a solid reporting system and thus provide very thorough data.
This website has been so very valuable.
Hi Julia,
You are correct. This article and its comments are not in any way an official reporting avenue. While we are happy to have discussions here, it is best to report reactions to VAERS as well.
Emma
Maybe you should ask for a small dose of Prednisone. Like small dose for a few days.
